Shawville’s Hockey Wall of Fame unveiled

Fourteen hockey greats from Shawville were forever immortalized on Saturday at the first annual Shawville Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony. About 300 people showed up at the Shawville Arena to watch history in the making as Shawville’s Hockey Wall of Fame was unveiled.

Grant McCagg spearheaded the project and relayed to the crowd on Saturday that he was very pleased to see the Wall of Fame come to fruition and was grateful for all of the support he received along the way. “It’s a bigger crowd than I expected. Four or five days ago, I think we had 50 tickets sold and as you can see, there’s a little more than 50 people here and that’s great,” said McCagg.

Awhile back, someone asked McCagg why Shawville didn’t have a Wall of Fame seeing as how so many other towns have found a way to honour their residents who have made an impact in the hockey world. “He said Renfrew has one and jeez, they’ve got like half the hockey history that Shawville does. We have such a great history here and I thought ‘well OK well why don’t they?’” McCagg told the crowd.

McCagg went about approaching various people involved in hockey as well as Shawville council to ask for their support with the project. “The response was fantastic at council, they just said ‘hey this is great’, supported me whole-heartedly, helped me out a lot and a year and a half later, here we are,” said McCagg. “I know it may seem like I did a lot of the work but I had so many people help out.”

A selection committee was formed, with the members choosing who would be inducted to the Wall of Fame.
