Lisa Coles, first vice-president and head of security at the Pontiac Agricultural Society , has been recognized with a national award for her work supporting the Shawville Fair.
Coles travelled to Edmonton, Alta. on an all-expenses-paid trip with four of her colleagues to collect the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (CAFE) Canadian Fair Champion award on Nov. 16.
“I was shocked when I got the call,” Coles said. “I actually cried. It’s an honour to have received this award”.
“My heart is at the fair,” Coles said. “It’s such a fun organization to be a part of, but if something doesn’t go right, I take it very serious.”
“I do have some pretty big roles to deal with,” she added, explaining that being in charge of security, first responders and sponsorship not only during the fair but throughout the year can be demanding, but that she loves the job.
“I wouldn’t change it any other way,” she said.
The award is meant to recognize “that special someone who goes the extra mile for your fair organization or agricultural society,” according to the CAFE website.
Coles was nominated for the award by coworker and Shawville Fair board director Tanya Greer.
“Lisa has been vice-president for several years now, and she’s always willing and eager to help out,” Greer said.
“She just deserves the recognition. She works extremely hard and she’s worked countless hours she never got paid for.”
Greer says she’s worked with Coles on the board for three years, but that the two have known each other “her whole life.”
“She took me under her wing and taught me lots,” Greer said.
“She’s taught everyone things because she’s very knowledgeable. She knows everything inside the office, all the stuff on the grounds and what takes place in the [fair] setup.”
As for Coles, she’s keen to spread the recognition of her “fair family’s” dedication.
“Without our other board directors and volunteers, we wouldn’t have what we have for the community,” she said.
“We have an amazing fair.”
The Shawville Fair is a multi-day event held annually over the Labour Day long weekend in September.
