A volleyball tournament held at École secondaire Sieur-de-Coulonge on Friday night raised a total of $1,987 in honour of Annabelle St-Cyr, a 15-year-old from Chapeau who recently passed away.
The tournament was organized in part by Danika Newberry and Suzie Labine who helped coach Annabelle in volleyball last year.
“We’re doing it to raise awareness and play in her memory, “ said Newberry. “A bunch of her friends are here, her family is here to support her and her boyfriend, so it is just to have fun and play in her memory.”
The tournament saw 13 teams participate. Funds raised will go to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and the Centre de loisirs des Draveurs in Fort Coulonge.
Participants came from all over Pontiac and beyond, notably Pembroke.
Demand to play in the tournament was so high that organizers had to cut off registration in order to prevent the tournament from going late into the night, according to Labine.
As part of the fundraising efforts organizers printed “Play for Annabell #4 stickers” in both English and French, in memory of the number four jersey she wore, as well as a canteen donated by Maison des jeunes and Carrefour jeunesse.
Of the funds raised from the tournament, $1,232 will go to CHEO and $755 will go to the arena, according to the organizers.
