“Really big” show at the Chapeau Fair: Nearly 600 people herded into the Upper Pontiac Sports Complex for the “Grand Ole Opry” hosted by Gail Gavan on Friday night.
The four-day fair opened on Thursday with a dozen floats winding their way through town to the fair grounds overlooking the blue expanse of the Ottawa River.
Participants and spectators continued to file through the gates all weekend with an estimated crowd of 600 on Sunday.
Veteran competitor Wib Carroll’s Clydesdales came away the big winners in most heavy horse categories. Dave Gallagher took the red ribbon for best 4-H beef entry with his year-old steer “Pete”.
Enrollment down at local schools: With less than one week before school starts, there are fewer students registered for classes this year compared to last year.
Nicole Forget, secretary at Dr. S.E. McDowell Elementary School in Shawville, said the enrollment this year is down a little bit compared to other years but she expects it to pick up by the time school starts.
Ms. Forget explained people intend to send their kids to school in the fall but sometimes forget to let the school know.
Enrollment is also down at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Quyon.
